Fruitty Fruits

Which fruit contains the most vitamins? I had this question in mind a long time ago when an advertisement on TV showing Ribena (supposedly blackcurrant) has the most Vitamin C in all fruits. NOT!

I did a re-"Google-Search" and found out that Guava contains the most vitamins especially Vitamin C. However another fruit with a high amount of vitamins like vitamin A (which guava doesn't have) is the avocado.

Another fruit that contain most vitamins and minerals is the famous Orange.

I Love Chilli

Hi people. Do you love chillies? I do. And most Singaporeans do too. I read online and found its nutritional facts.

Red chilis contain high amounts of Vitamin C and carotene (provitamin A). Yellow and especially green chilis (which are essentially unripe fruit) contain a considerably lower amount of both substances. In addition, peppers are a good source of most B vitamins, and vitamin B6 in particular. They are very high in potassium and high in magnesium and iron. Their high vitamin C content can also substantially increase the uptake of non-heme iron from other ingredients in a meal, such as beans and grains.

The nutritional value of capsicums lies in their vitamin content. Vitamins A, C and E are present in sweet and hot chilli peppers, the sweet having particularly large amounts. As a matter of fact, 1 ounce of raw sweet pepper contains approximately 40 mg of Vitamin C, which is two thirds of the recommended daily intake of that vitamin. However, chilli peppers and sweet peppers lose their vitamin content when they are cooked or pickled, or if they are allowed to ripen too much. Scientists say that chillis add more than just flavour to the diet. Capsaicin stimulates the appetite, helps to clear the lungs, improves circulation and acts as a painkiller for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Capsaicin, which is effective in preventing the spreading of prostate cancer, once ingested, causes the brain to release endorphins into the bloodstream which can induce a natural feeling of well being similar to that achieved by long distance runners.

They are known to treat osteoarthritis pain and inflammations effectively. Contrary to the popular belief, chili peppers prevent stomach ulcers. These are also found to boost the immunity of the body and are known for several cardiovascular benefits.  Chili peppers also help in stimulating secretions that help clear mucus from the congested nose or lungs

So if you are on a diet, especially on weight loss, add chilli to your meal. But if you want to gain weight, eat less chilli ;).

Bye.
